A Moleskine alternative
I love Moleskine notebooks. I love having a physical notebook to write notes in. Even though I also love computers and my iPhone, they just don’t have that ease of jotting in a quick note. And they require electricity, so you’re in deep waters when you run out of power.
Recently, I found out about some other notebooks that are just as good — if not better — than Moleskine!
Ecosystem notebooks are the same as Moleskine in some ways:
- They are the same size.
- They come in multiple formats (though not as many as Moleskin).
- They come in hardcover and softcover.
- They have an elastic band to keep your notebook shut.
- They have a matching fabric bookmark.
- There’s even a little pocket in the back of every notebook. (On the website it sounds like the pocket is optional, but so far every notebook I purchased has had a pocket in it. Later I realized they were talking about pocket inserts, not the actual pocket.)
In my opinion Ecosystem notebooks have some other advantages:
- They have whiter paper.
- They have thicker paper. (Though sometimes I do like thinner paper.)
- They use 100% recycled materials.
- Every page has a perforation!
- They are the same price or cheaper (depending on where you get your notebooks).
- Each one comes with a unique serial number that you can register in case you lose your notebook. The person who finds it can look up the serial number and let you know your beloved long lost notebook has been found.
- And… my favorite… lots of pretty colors! (Very important to a graphic designer.)
I recently got a few Ecosystem notebooks and I’m totally hooked. Every morning I use to journal in. The rest of the day I use another notebook to jot notes and write quick things to do. It’s nice to know that I have the freedom to tear out any pages I don’t need in the future.
The only bummer for me is that the Artist version (blank pages) don’t come in all the colors. I especially love the aqua color (called “Lagoon”) but I hate ruled pages… but alas, Lagoon is not available with blank pages! However, it is available in black plus 3 other colors if you like blank pages.
Here’s to happy jotting!

These notebooks look cool! I’m wondering if you mean by “moleskin alternative” that they are not made of moleskin. Or maybe moleskin is a brand and not a type of material?
Sorry about the confusion. I was referring to the brand Moleskine.
